THE LIFE BEFORE HER EYES

With Uma Thurman, Evan Rachel Wood, Eva Amurri, Brett Cullen, Gabrielle Brennan, Oscar Isaac, Nathalie Paulding, Maggie Lacey

Written by Emil Stern (based on the novel by Laura Kasischke)
Directed by Vadim Perelman

With Thurman's steady aging, her choice of more mature roles will naturally increase. Here she plays a woman finding herself in an emotional crisis as the anniversary of a school tragedy (of which she was a part) draws near. Jumping between her current state of mind (which also includes suspecting her husband), and her school-day experiences, her best friend, and the deadly day that changed everything, the story sometimes drags forward with a less exciting pace than many may demand. But it all seems necessary as it focuses in on the climax which will catch many off guard with a surprise catch (while others will feel “WTF?!” - finding it to be a contrived device stringing them along).
When it comes to emotional teenage roles, Evan Rachel Wood is hardly a bad choice. She portrays Thurman's youthful character in the flashbacks with great effect.
